Terminology for 2005-2006 Chart

Administrators: Directors of schools, principals, supervisors, assistant principals, etc.

Average Daily Membership (ADM): Average daily count of students enrolled. Used to determine the amount of state funding each system receives.

Average Number of Students per Teacher: A comparison ratio used only in this chart and calculated by dividing the ADM by the number of teachers.

Classroom Teacher: Includes vocational teachers, home/hospital instruction, special education, and grades K-12 teachers.

Core Course: Core academic class required under NCLB to be taught by a highly qualified teacher.

Economically Disadvantaged: Student who qualifies for the free or reduced lunch program.

Expenditures per Pupil: Total current operating expenditures (local, state and federal) on a per pupil basis. Examples include instructional materials, maintenance and transportation.

Graduation Rate: The percent of “on-time” graduates with a regular high school diploma. GED and Special Education diplomas are not counted. Graduation rate is a federally required benchmark,

Highly Qualified Teacher: A teacher who holds at least a Bachelor’s Degree, is fully licensed in Tennessee, and submits the required documents to demonstrate competency in the content area(s) being taught.

Instructional Staff: Includes principals, assistant principals, attendance teachers, supervisors, school psychologists, school social workers, librarians, vocational teachers, home/hospital instruction, special education, and grades K-12 teachers.

School in Good Standing: School which met the federal benchmarks based on student testing at the end of the previous school year.

Title I: Federally funded programs in high poverty schools that target children with low achievement.

Most data may be found in the Report Cards produced by the Tennessee Department of Education. Report Cards for the previous school year are made available each fall. The most current Report Card available at the time this chart was created was for 2005-2006.

The salary information and statewide rankings may be found on the website of the Tennessee Education Association. The TEA attributed the salary data to unpublished reports for August 2006 and February 2007 from the TN Dept of Education. The salaries and rankings available at the time this chart was created were for 2005-2006.
